Endurance Saddles

We offer a ton of trail riding saddles The difference between an endurance saddle and a regular saddle is going to be noticeable by about the fifth or sixth hour. When you’re in it to win it in the challenging but invigorating sport of endurance riding, you understand that your whole self is firmly planted in that seat, and the finish line isn’t really ever in sight! A proper endurance saddle can be the difference between a win and a loss (not to mention, it can decrease the stiffness that can come long after you’ve dismounted!).

Endurance riding is an equestrian sport based on controlled long-distance races. This sport challenges both rider and horse to cover a large portion of land in a timely matter. It is one of the international competitions recognized by the FEI. There are endurance rides worldwide. There are two main types of long-distance riding, competitive trail riding and endurance rides. In an endurance ride, the winning horse is the first one to cross the finish line while stopping periodically to pass a veterinary check that deems the animal in good health and fit to continue. Winning riders complete 100-mile (160 km) rides in 10-12 hours. Worldwide, rules vary. Competitive trail rides are shorter, and factors other than speed are considered. Both competitions necessitate endurance saddles –these rides can last for hours, even days.

Endurance racers need a special saddle that has been designed to most importantly be lightweight – we are talking hours of riding here, so added weight is just going to slow you down. Generally speaking, endurance saddles are built with less skirting and therefore retain less heat. In competition the advantage of using an this type of saddle is simple: the horse carries less overall weight and for the horse, the saddle is cooler over an extended time. You want something comfortable for you and your horse as well, because you’ll be riding awhile.

Endurance saddles are made both to ease the weight of the rider for the horse and to conveniently tie things to the saddle. They typically have wider panels and stirrups with a wider tread. And since you’ll be riding awhile, you'll often have extra metal rings for the attachment of equipment. The seats need to be balanced and secure for security. Most experienced endurance riders don’t like horns on their saddles as they get in the way when ducking under trees or riding uphill. You never know what challenges your environment might pose, so you might as well prepare as best you can.

This should be helpful in your quest to be a marathon rider! Many people don’t race competitively, but find that endurance saddles are more comfortable in their long rides, in overnight treks, or for general riding. Endurance riding is a fun and exciting sport, and can be made more comfortable for you and your horse by making sure you have a quality endurance saddle for the ride.
