Show saddles can be the extra "oomph" you need to win any show competition. If you’re going to the trouble to get yourself and your horse all gussied up, you can’t show up with any old shabby saddle! While the competition and preparation of showing can be stressful enough, having a beautiful show saddle is like having an ace up your sleeve – you know you can count on it to help you score extra points!

A horse show is a judged exhibition of horses and ponies. Many different horse breeds and equestrian disciplines hold competitions worldwide, from local to the international levels. Most horse shows run from one to three days and consist of a series of different performances where a group of horses with similar training or characteristics compete against one another for awards and, often, prize money.

Show Saddles Are Better Than Luck When It Comes To Winning

The saddles below are different than regular saddles for exactly that purpose. Just as you wouldn’t give a presentation in your pajamas, you can’t win a competition in your everyday riding saddle. Judges are looking for pristine, beautifully crafted, and perfectly styled everything – from your outfit to your horse’s main to the polished gleam of leather. By adding leather design or decorative metal works, you ensure that the judges remember you. In Western competitions, coordinating your outfit and your tack and saddle make your look pop and add great style to your overall presentation. Matching your hat, chaps, or boots to your saddle and tack gear can make you and your horse look very professional and polished.

Most show saddles are designed to show off your horse's conformation, most notably the shoulder, and therefore are very minimal saddles with a close fit and straight-cut flap. The seat is very flat, and there are no knee or thigh rolls, but sometimes beginners use modified models, which include a knee roll and provide some support for the rider. Many are decorated with metal details or leatherwork. For the western events, use a complete leather bridle, western saddle, and saddle pad. On competition day, do not apply any shine-enhancing spray to areas where the saddle goes. It will cause the saddle to slip a lot.

Remember, show saddles don’t have to be used for merely showing. They are beautiful pieces of equipment for sure, but remember that they are also made for riding! They are durable and strong saddles, just dialed up a notch in fashion. They can also double as everyday use or for trail riding, but normal wear and tear might make them look less fancy for competitions.
